PostHeaderIcon What is the quickest and most efficient method of learning a new language? French specifically.?

My wife and I are looking to learn the French language. We have both learned secondary languages (I speak German and my wife Spanish) and feel that French would be a good choice for a third language. Unfortunately, we are both busy professionals who don’t have time to take a class from a local university. Any recommendations?

With headphones in your sleep or with a friend who has time and knows the language.

Immersion is the way to go. It is how the Berlitz Language Schools work. The original school was severely understaffed, and the owner had to go away on the same day as his French instructor arrived. His instructor did not speak English at all, so he told him to try his best and left. When he came back he found that the students were speaking fluently, proving that immersion works.

List to audio tapes (or CDs). They are pretty good.

There have been some books like Super Learning which claim to teach a method in which a person can learn a language very quickly. Unfortunately the book appears to be a hoax claiming results which cannot be substantiated.

Perhaps a better claim can be made from Jerry Lucas or Harry Lorraine who have both written books on memorization and use mnemonics or tricks to increase memory capacity.

Their tricks seem to work as both of then have amply demonstrated amazing feats of memory in performances unfortunately most people cannot duplicate their results after trying forever to learn and practise their techniques.
