I have many relitives in france and am going to visit them in a few months. I’m pretty good with languages and love learning them and would like to be able to speak French pretty well by then. I know that I can’t be fluent by then but I would love to be able to easily communicate.

Any tips? Hints? etc
my dad speaks french pretty fluently and I am in contact with some of the relitives. I’ve been teaching myself for a while now.

I know it’s POSSIBLE, but I want to know how easy it is!
I am moving to Barcelona in Fall, so I want to be able to speak Spanish to communicate with others, but I have been learning French for the past year and would like to continue to study it.

What are some tips on maintaining it? Have you ever done this?

Below are five specific ways to accelerate learning the French language.

1. Incorporating studying into your daily routine means taking advantage of all the time you spend not working during your busy day. This could be your drive to work, a walk to work, all your breaks, your lunch hour, your bathroom breaks, your morning routine before leaving for work. 2. Make sure the materials you are using for study are effective. You can study all you want during your downtime but if the method of study is poor you will not learn a thing. When choosing a good audio course on French you want to make sure it is an audio course that allows you to immerse yourself in the language. This does not mean just learning nouns. Try to stay away from courses that are excessively heavy on teaching nouns. Learning nouns in French is necessary but make sure it has a good mix of nouns, verb conjugation, grammar and conversational French. The immersion method offers the best way to learn the language quickly.

3. When learning French words you can always have a stack of index cards and use them when you have some downtime. But when you are learning words be sure to use your imagination. For example you may want to group certain words together and imagine a scenario that is particularly memorable. Be creative and make your own scenarios. This is much more effective than just memorizing words with no creative thought.

4. Power studying is important when you study during your free time. So you have had a great day immersing yourself in the French language. To really accelerate the process all you need is 15-30 minutes of power studying in the evening. Power studying means absolutely no distractions with a specific goal in mind. Do not allow yourself to listen to music, watch TV, talk on the phone or get up from your study area. The more disciplined you are with your power studying the less time you will need to master French.

5. Language Exchange is the icing on the cake. Once you have immersed yourself in study you need to learn how to use it in conversation. Language exchange is an activity that should be fun! During Language Exchange you spend one hour teaching your language and one hour learning their language. This is what will bring you to fluency without actually moving to France.

Remember that consistency and discipline is key. Before you start following any of these steps you should write down your daily schedule. It is also a good idea to have a checklist. The checklist could be a way of tracking your daily activities. This will keep you accountable for your actions.

Irrespective of whether you are young or old, the fact that cannot be denied is the excitement one feels while learning and discovering a language. If you’re looking for a fast and easy way to learn French words then the good news is that it can indeed be easier than the traditional methods you’ve probably been through so far. Learning French words certainly shouldn’t be a boring, repetitive challenge. For years many people have gone through the “read-and-repeat” process which is a shame because for real French language success all you need to know are a few language learning tips.

The first and most important tip is consistency. It’s not always easy to dedicate a fixed amount of time, but whilst ten minutes learning French is better than none at all you’ll absorb much more of the French language if you can apply yourself in a structured manner. This can be going to French lessons (something I highly recommend), listening to a CD or MP3 while you’re on the move, setting aside an hour each evening for home study, any of a whole bunch of methods. Sound boring? Don’t let it be. Mix up the methods. Find ways to challenge yourself. Learn French related to your favorite passtime or hobby. What do you like to do when you go out? How would you handle that in French?

Another top tip is what I like to call saturation. Learn French words via sound recordings at every opportunity you can. Get a CD or MP3 that you can listen to in the car, on the train, around the house. Watch French films – even if you don’t understand them at first you’ll be amazed how quickly you pick things up. Likewise if you can receive French radio, listen to that too – something you can probably have running on your PC. Even if you’re not listening directly to it, even if you’re not concentrating on what’s being said, some of it will sink in. Your subconscious mind will learn for you – without any effort on your part. I’ve even had French playing quietly as I doze off to sleep at night or to wake me in the morning – you might laugh, but it works!

So to learn French words successfully you do need to give it some serious consideration and effort. It needn’t cost you a lot of money and it needn’t take all your time and effort – that’s just hard work and nobody learns well if it’s hard work – but you do have to try a few things and find what’s right for you – then you need to do those things regularly.

Here’s an example that works really well for me. I like reading so now I always have a couple of books on the go, not just one – a novel or something I’m interested in written in English, and a French phrase book. I read one for a while, then the other. That way I don’t get bored. I also bought a little digital dictionary made by Franklin with the help of Larousse who are THE name in French dictionaries (you can get them at Amazon). It’s about the size of a mobile phone and has over 50,000 French words and phrases in it. It goes everywhere with me. Sometimes I use it for looking up French words I don’t understand when I’m out and about but quite often I’ll just sit and flick through the screens to teach myself a bit more. With it I can learn French words anywhere and any time I like.

Knowing how to learn French with simple and painless learning techniques can increase your ability to absorb and really understand the language. Many basic learning techniques that are taught in classrooms and independent programs help you to memorize but not retain information. If you want to learn French and be proficient, you have to apply what you ‘memorized’ in your daily life.

There are lots of sites with vocabulary games, funny tongue twisters, and mind-benders. Taking a mental break is critical to retaining information and learning French. Unlike learning math, history and other subjects where memory is important, learning a new language requires practice. Memorizing vocabulary and phrases won’t do you any good if you can’t use them. I encourage you to learn more about the French language. But if you’re just starting out, do yourself a favor and don’t waste any more money on all those different language learning programs.
