Some rhymed couplets, a joyous refrain, it’s 1943 in Paris and Edith Piaf is singing of her love in this classic chanson, words by Edith Piaf, music by Alèc Siniavine: It’s a year before she met singer/actor Yves Montand, but he dominates this video because his pictures most suit the romantic text. Others in her list of lovers, Greek singer/songwriter Georges Moustaki (“Milord”),world boxing champion Marcel Cerdan, American actor Eddie Constantine, French actors Jacques Pills and Paul Meurisse, French songwriter Henri Contet, (“Padam, Padam”)and hairdresser/singer Théo Sarapo. Charles Aznavour makes an appearance but was reported not to be serious lover. Thanks to philipchek of YouTube and Paris who guides non-francophones through the vagaries of chanson and the French language and helped with this translation. Très beau choix de photos. C’est bien de préciser de préciser que Piaf savait aussi écrire des chansons. Merci VNRose3 – alias lightning494 pour pleins d’autres traductions de Piaf, Brel et Brassens.
